Bogans and Beer Cans

In my head, I still have dreams that I might one day grow up to be an elegant lady. Highly, highly unlikely given that I am now in my (quite early) thirties but still regularly trip over my own feet, leave the house without brushing my hair, my teeth or some either vital aspect of proper presentation. But most of the time I give looking like a decent grown up a red hot go.

The exception is my slippers. You see, it gets cold here on the frozen island. As soon as I walk in the door, from the months of April to October, I put slippers on. But not just any slippers. Tall ugg boots. The shameful but accurate unofficial uniform of the great Australian bogan.

But what is a bogan? Just in case you are blissfully unaware:

bogan

I should be ashamed. Really. Proper ladies do not wear ugg boots. But I do. However, there are rules.

– My ugg boots must not ever been seen beyond the limits of our letterbox.

– Even then, I must make sure there are no cars in the street if I make the dash to the letterbox with my boots on.

– I will deny, if asked in public. that these are my favorite shoes.

– If the doorbell rings and I don’t know who is there, I take my boots off before opening the door. You never know, Prince Harry AND George Clooney are both still single.

But in my darkest moments, when I worry about my affection for bogan footwear I have one consoling thought;

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (one of the classiest and most elegant women in history) had a proud and very extensive collection of beer cans.

On’ya Jackie.

Sailor Vee eats Pudding for Breakfast

I do. It’s true.

It’s getting fricking cold here on the island. Really cold in the mornings especially. I do like porridge but have about reached my boredom level with it and (given it’s likely to make a pretty big place in my competition preparation diet if I compete later this year) am giving it a rest. But where does that leave me for a healthy breakfast?

  • Love oats – but over porridge
  • Love eggs – but chronically too lazy too cook much at breakfast time
  • See above point, must cook in less than 3 minutes, preferably without me touching it
  • I know that I need a good balance of carbs/protein/good fats in my morning meal to keep me awesome all day
  • Must be warm. Maybe even hot. Some mornings it must be liquid magma hot to counteract our freezing island climate

Enter, the latest breakfast invention.

Breakfast pudding

Sailor Vee’s Banana Oat Breakfast Pudding

  • 1 x small banana, mashed
  • 1 egg
  • 1tbs chia seeds (black or white is fine)
  • 1/2 cup of quick oats
  • (If the mix is looking super dry I sometimes add a tiny dash of low fat milk)
  • (I find the banana makes it sweet enough, but you could add a little stevia if you wanted)

Method:

Mash banana, mix in egg, throw in oats and chia, mix until combined. Microwave for 2-3 minutes until set.

(Calories 353, Carbohydrates 50g, Protein 16g, Fats 16g)

**As the picture shows, I fairly frequently mix up what I throw in here. Sometimes I use sultanas instead of banana, and really you could use whatever makes you happy. To increase the protein percentage without upping the calories too much you could easily add another egg white or two.

ENJOY!!

Warm regards from the frozen island,

What’s your uniform?

Even without a job, I have a uniform.

Due to a recent wardrobe meltdown (where I may or may not have thrown all of my clothes on the floor) I realised that I wear approximately 10% of my wardrobe. And I make it look good. But what am I supposed to do with the remaining 90%?

After some googling, it appears I have naturally created a ‘capsule wardrobe’ by which I take a small number of garments and mix-match from them exclusively. For this winter, it looks mostly like this:

There are of course a few explanations to make. Notably:

  • Yes. I do wear underwear. I just didn’t feel like sharing it with you 🙂
  • Numbers of items – I do have multiples of a couple of these such as my jeans and tights!
  • Pajamas
  • Gym gear and sneakers
  • Evening wear
  • I actually don’t have a day dress in the mix at the moment. I looked at the beginning of the season but didn’t love anything.
  • I do KNOW that the tan bag has no place in that group. But it’s a big solid Michael Kors that fits everything the children will demand of me without making me look like a pack mule. The Stam is also enormous, but nothing child related goes inside because of the suede lining.

So there is 28 pieces (including my jewelry which are non-negotiable items year-round). What’s yours? Show me on Polyvore – I’m such a snoop!

Big question – what’s the go for the upcoming Spring/Summer? As you can see, I’m not so big on colour but will happily hear suggestions?
